My apologies regarding this month’s Chappy Community Center lobster roll dinner. I was late by a week. Turns out that it already happened. However, according to the CCC calendar, the next one is the third week of August. Order lobster rolls by noon on Sunday, August 13 for pick-up the following Wednesday.

Chappy household hazardous material collection will take place at the Chappy Community Center on Saturday, July 15 from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. sharp. Bring your icky stuff in liquid-tight containers and volunteers will load it into Skip Bettencourt’s pickup truck. He will take it over to the big collection site up by the airport for you. Just think of all of the hours and effort that these wonderful folks are saving you! Check the Martha’s Vineyard Refuse District website for detailed information about what is accepted.

The first CCC classical concert will be held on Saturday, July 15 starting at 7:30 p.m. The musicians of the Manhattan Chamber Players, a New York collective, will make a return visit at their own request. They are a quintet of clarinet plus strings and will perform Mozart, Brahms and Bartok. Purchase tickets on the community center website.

You don’t want to miss the Chappaquiddick Island Association annual meeting on Saturday, July 22 starting at 9 a.m. at the Community Center. It’s always interesting, very informative and often entertaining.

Don’t miss the BBQ potluck/silent auction fundraiser at the community center on Thursday, July 27 from 6 to 10 p.m. They will provide makings for the grill. Bring a side dish or a sweet treat. Feel free to bring whatever you would like.

Keep in mind that the deadline to submit photos for the 2024 Chappy Community Center calendar is Friday, July 28. See the center’s website for submission criteria. Photos will be on display for voting starting on July 31.

While waiting for the Chappy Ferry in your vehicle, kindly turn your lights off. Parking lights as well as headlights. Your LED lights are bad for the captain’s eyes, day and night. Just because your headlight switch is set to “off” doesn’t mean that they are actually out.

Check the mirror provided at each line. Your LED lights are much more intense than what you see in the mirror. You might need to shut off your engine to make the lights go out.

The captains greatly appreciate your attention to this. Refraining from shining bright lights out over the water is very basic islander etiquette.
