The Chappy Community Center will hold its annual meeting this Saturday, August 12 from 9 to 11 a.m. Many activities and events continue right into the Labor Day weekend. Check the center’s website for details. Lots of CCC goodies are available through the online store.

The Chappaquiddick Island Association will be sponsoring single-issue forums in order to explore in depth the big concerns affecting the island community. On Saturday, August 19 from 9 to 11 a.m. the focus will be on the barrier beaches. Darci Schofield of The Trustees of Reservations will be the guest speaker. On Thursday, August 24 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., the leadership team of the Chappaquiddick community emergency response team will present an update on their plans to keep islanders safe during times of emergency.

These meetings will be held in-person at the Chappy Community Center. Efforts are underway to provide for Zoom attendance in the future. Two more forums, to be held in September, will be announced at a later date.

The Chappy Ferry steering committee will meet Tuesday, August 29 from 5 to 6 p.m. Check the town of Edgartown website for the agenda and Zoom link a couple of days prior to the date.

If the sky is clear this weekend, be on the lookout for meteors of the Perseids shower. This is the peak time of this meteor shower that fortunately occurs on a moonless night. The radiant point, the constellation Perseus, will rise above the eastern horizon by 10 p.m. In years past we’ve been treated to 60 meteors per hour.

Remind your contractors and service providers who may have big projects planned for this fall that Chappy Ferry service will be curtailed after the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby ends. Each year, one of the two ferry boats must be hauled out of the water for U.S. Coast Guard inspection and maintenance.

This year the On Time III, which is the longer of the ferries, will be out of service for perhaps six weeks. This will leave the shorter On Time II to carry all of the traffic. It carries only two full-size pickup trucks at a time. Plan for longer wait times and avoid scheduling concrete deliveries for the period of Sunday, Oct. 15 until at least Thanksgiving.

Edgartown Seafood has brought back the age-old tradition of delivering to Chappy Point. Place your order before 3 p.m. and they will meet you at the ferry on the Chappy side at 5:30 p.m. with your seafood. They have all of the fixings that go along with a fish dinner as well. Call the shop at 508-627-3791. Imagine how much time you will save by letting them take the ferry ride!
