On Friday, under the lights on a crisp early-fall night, the Vineyard football team took on the Lunenburg Knights with both teams battling back and forth, tied at 13-13 at the end of the fourth quarter.
In overtime, the Vineyard’s middle linebacker and kicker Caio Guimaraes lined up a field goal and booted a beauty, the pigskin soaring through the uprights as his teammates rushed the field and Come Sail Away by Styx blasted over the PA system.
The dramatic 16-13 win came after both teams’ defenses held their own against a relentless ground-and-pound attack. In the fourth quarter, the Vineyarders held a one-score advantage by way of touchdowns from Kaio Dacosta and Aiden Conley but their opponents had possession and seemed to be gaining momentum. The Lunenburg quarterback capped a six-minute drive with a heroic run on fourth down to break into the end zone and tie the game at 13.
On the ensuing possession with just over two minutes left, the Vineyarders went three and out and all of a sudden it was up to the defense to prevent the unthinkable from happening. Conley intercepted a last-ditch toss to the end zone and the game went into overtime. With their backs to the wall the Vineyard defense held strong — Chase Grant made a huge tackle for loss, Lunenburg turned it over on downs, and Guimares took care of the rest with his successful field goal.
With the win, the Vineyarders improved to 2-1. Next up they take on Carver on the road Friday before the first league matchup with Mashpee at home on Oct. 6.
Earlier in the day, before the football team took the field, the boys soccer team blanked Bourne 6-0 for its fourth win of the season. Finn MacLeod earned his second shutout this year as Yury De Moraes, Lucas Sousa, Josh Pereira, Porter Moehnke and Kaua De Oliveira all scored for the Vineyard. De Oliveira had two goals as the Vineyard’s defense held their opponents to just two shots on net.
The win over the Canalmen came as a bounce-back effort for the boys after they lost to Cohasset on the road earlier in the week by the same score. With the win, they improved to 4-1-1 so far. Their next home match is Oct. 5 against perennial powerhouse Nauset. Before then the boys are on the road this week against Sturgis West and Barnstable.
The girls soccer team bumped their record up to 7-1 with a 7-0 thwacking of O’Bryant at home last Wednesday and a 3-0 win on Tuesday against Sturgis Chater School West. Sydney Burguiere opened the scoring last week for the Vineyarders as Elena Giordano, Emily Coogan, Emily MacMillian, Reese Malowski and Caroline Bettencourt all put points on the board. Coogan scored twice as Giordano also had three assists on the day. Georgia Magden and Delilah Oliver shared the shutout effort in net.
With the wins, the girls pushed their goal differential to 25-3 so far this year. The team is back at home for a big test against Barnstable on Oct. 3.
Last Thursday the golf team planted its first stake in the win column with a 254-300 victory over Dennis-Yarmouth at Farm Neck. Jack DeBettencourt led the Vineyarders with a 39, Nick Rabeni shot a 41, Mason Cron a 42, Jacoby Light a 43, Peter Williamson a 44 and Piper Blau rounded out the Vineyarders’ scores with a 45.
This week the Vineyard golfers take on Sandwich at Sandwich Hollows Golf Course before they return to Farm Neck on Thursday to take on Monomoy.
Both the girls and boys cross country teams dropped their first league meet of the season last week to Barnstable on the Cape. The boys were defeated 47-16 and the girls lost 50-15. This week they take on Falmouth at home before traveling to Wrentham this weekend for the Frank Kelley Invitational on Saturday.
Rounding out last week’s action, the field hockey team is still fighting for their first win after tying Nauset 1-1 in the third game of the season. On Friday they faced a rolling St. John Paul II squad who defeated the Vineyarders 5-0 to stay atop the division. This week the girls will play Sturgis West at home Thursday starting at 3:30 p.m. before a string of four-straight away games. They face Brockton at home on Oct. 14.
