While the weather outside has been frightful the high school’s winter sports teams are off to a roaring start.
On the ice, the girls and boys hockey teams have started hot with tone-setting wins to start their seasons. The girls began with a little extra fire in their match-up as they took on the Whalers on Nantucket and sailed home with a 6-0 victory.
Senior netminder Rebecca Mandelli earned her first career shutout for the Vineyarders as Jane and Emily Coogan each scored twice in the victory. Ava Mikos and Abby Geary also recorded their first career varsity goals for MV. Wednesday the girls head to the Cape to take on Barnstable at Butler Rink in Hyannis.
The boys opened against Saint John Paul II and came away with a 2-1 win in front of an excited home crowd. Nate Averill notched the first Vineyard score on a power play with assists from Hunter Johnson and Mason Warburton. Then, in the third period, Joe Mederios scored his first varsity goal to give MV the lead with assists from Liam and Aiden Conley. Zach Mathias finished with 11 saves in net for the Vineyarders.
In the boys’ second matchup of the season they kept it rolling with a 7-2 win over Monomoy at Tony Kent Arena in South Dennis. Averill had a hat trick as the Conley brothers, Griff Callahan and Sol Donnelly also put a puck in the net. Then, on Saturday, Nantucket steamed into town and rolled over the boys 4-1 handing them their first loss of the season. The Whalers went up 4-0 before Warburton snapped the shutout with assists from Johnson and Teddy Pacheco. Up next the Vineyarders play in a four team tournament with Westfield, Norwell and Sandwich at the Gallo Ice Arena in Bourne this weekend.
Meanwhile, on the basketball court, the girls also opened their season with a win over the Whalers on Nantucket. Delilah Oliver led the Vineyarders with 14 points and nine rebounds and Ava Townes added nine points as MV was victorious 49-27. However, against Nauset in their home opener, the girls lost a tough one to the Warriors 55-28. Oliver again led them in scoring with 18 and Avery Mulvey contributed eight points and eight rebounds.
On Friday last week the team bounced back against Sturgis West on the Cape with a 40-23 win. Townes led the Vineyarders with 21 points and eight steals. Unfortunately, the last two matchups have been rough as the girls lost to Abington the following day 55-39 and then on Tuesday 62-35 against Dennis-Yarmouth. They’ll be home again next Wednesday when Barnstable comes to town for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
The boys basketball team won their first three games to start the season. First they topped Nauset 58-50 on the road, then returned to defeat Abington 66-59 in their home opener and took down Nantucket 58-47 last Sunday. On Tuesday though, Dennis-Yarmouth got the best of them as MV was without Josh Lake and only hit one of their 18 three point attempts and lost by 13. After the holiday, they’re on the road against Barnstable Wednesday before taking on Dover-Sherborn at home next Friday with tipoff coming at 12:30 p.m.
For the first time in decades, the high school wrestling team participated in a varsity meet last Saturday on the Cape at the Sandwich high school early bird kickoff tournament. The Vineyarders competed against nine other schools and earned 60 team points led by four finalists: MJ Magaraci finished 3-1, Caiden Gardner 4-2, Odin Robinson 3-2 and Liam Bruni 2-2.
Wrestling coach Jerry Kadien said the boys performed beyond expectation at a tough event. “The coaching staff and I could not be more proud of the work that has been done to get to today and expect big things in the near future,” he said.
In another big event last week, on Friday both the boys and girls swim teams defeated Barnstable on the Cape in a league meet. The girls won 84-79 and the boys 92-40.
For the girls, this was the first time the Vineyarders have won a league meet since the 20’-21’ season. They were behind by only one point going into the final event of the evening with the 200 freestyle relay on deck. Nora Motahari, Leah Debettencourt, Nora Duncheva and Maybeline Brown finished in 5:07.65 to win it for the Vineyard.
On the boys side, they started the event with the 200 medley relay and never looked back. Emmett Silva began with the backstroke, then Simon Hammarlund swam the breaststroke, Andy Carr the butterfly and Kaua DeAssis freestyle for a finishing time of 2:00.29, 10 seconds faster than Barnstable. Up next, the Vineyard swimmers are off to Nantucket Friday to take on the Whalers.
Finally, the indoor track team has had two Cape and Islands league meets so far to start the season. All of the meets take place at Wheaton College and feature athletes from the Vineyard, Nantucket, Falmouth, Saint John Paul II and Barnstable.
In the first meet, Madison Mello had the best finish for the Vineyarders with a first place in the shot put with a 31 ‘09.5 toss. Caroline Bettencourt placed second in the 55 meter dash with an 8.12 sprint, Camille Brand placed second in the high jump with a 5’2 leap, Rodeo Purves-Langer third place in the 1000 meter at 2:59.38, Kaniel Morgan third in the shot put with a 34 ‘6.75 toss, Broden Vincent fourth in the mile at 5:29.59 and Jonah Mafcher fourth in the two mile at 14:30.34.
In the second meet on Tuesday, Mello again won the shot put with a 32 ‘5.5 toss, Brand won the high jump with a five foot leap and came in fifth in the 300 meter at 47.89 while Enzo Reis finished third in the 55 meter hurdles at 9.64 seconds.
Up next, on Dec. 27, the Vineyarders travel to Boston for the MSTCA Boston Holiday Challenge at the track at New Balance.
