The Vineyard girls hockey team is an offensive juggernaut. The squad is on a five-game winning streak after defeating Barnstable 5-4 Wednesday at home.
Recent victories also include a win against Milton 2-1 and Boston Latin Academy 4-1 on the road. Against Latin Academy, Jane Coogan broke a 1-1 tie with a blast from the blue line and an assist from Elle Mone with just under 1:30 left in the final period. She tacked on an empty netter after and then Isabelle Blake tallied her second goal of the game to bring about the final score.
Last week, the girls defeated Dennis-Yarmouth 7-2 at home as freshmen Abigail Geary and Ava Mikos each scored twice and Mone, Blake and Grace Cotton each scored once. The girls also beat Needham in a scrimmage at the Warriors Ice Arena, the Bruin's practice facility.
On the boys’ side of the rink, the Vineyarders have also continued their strong start to the season following tournament play during winter vacation at the University of New Hampshire ice arena. Since returning from break, the boys have played twice on the Cape. Last Wednesday they tied Barnstable 3-3 and then on Saturday, they defeated Dennis-Yarmouth 2-0.
The Vineyarders held a 3-1 lead against the Red Hawks but squandered later in the game. Hunter Johnson, Nate Averill and Liam Conley all scored for MV. Johnson and Averill also had two assists while Conley and Max Metell also tallied points in the assist category.
Against the D-Y Dolphins, Conley had a goal and an assist, Johnson a goal, Averill an assist and Mason Warburton two assists. Senior netminder Zach Mathias was locked in as he added another shutout to his record. Up next the boys are home against Nauset Friday with puck drop coming at 3 p.m.
The indoor track and field squad has also been busy following the holidays as two of their best represented the Vineyard in the Holiday Challenge at the New Balance Track in Boston. Competing against athletes from dozens of other schools, Camille Brand and Madison Mello fit right in at the top of the leaderboard as Brand finished third overall in the high jump with a 5 ‘02 leap and Mello 10th in the shot put with a 32’ 06 toss.
Then, last Thursday, the team competed in the third and final regular season Cape and Islands meet at Wheaton College. For the girls, Mello took first in the shot put with a 29’ 06 toss, Caroline Bettencourt placed second in the 55m dash at 8.04 and Juliana Desousa finished fourth in the 55m hurdles with a 10.79 time. For the boys, Enzo Reis placed third in the 55m hurdles at 9.09, Kaniel Morgan placed fourth in shot put with a 33’ 09 toss and Broden Vincent also placed fourth in the 1000m finishing in 3:09.44.
Next up for the Vineyarders is the Northeast Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury this weekend.
On the basketball court, the Vineyard boys have also enjoyed a strong start to their season as they defeated Falmouth 75-70 on the road Tuesday for their sixth win of the season. After Christmas they lost to Barnstable 54-42 but have since rebounded with wins at home over Dover-Sherbourne, Dennis-Yarmouth and now the Clippers.
Against Dover-Sherbourne, Sam Zack scored 20 as Josh Lake added 16 along with seven rebounds. Nate Story also scored 12 and nabbed four steals while the man in the five spot, Tysean Thomas, secured eight rebounds, five points and rejected three shots.
Having lost to D-Y earlier this season with a short-handed team, the Vineyarders wasted no time showing the Dolphins their offensive firepower this time around. Zack dropped 25, Lake added 24 and Story another 12 as Thomas and Jack DeBettencourt cleaned up the glass on both ends of the floor. Next up Nauset comes to town on Friday for a 4:30 p.m. tipoff. Then on Sunday at 1 p.m. the team heads to the TD Garden to take on Nantucket.
For the girls basketball team, the sledding hasn’t been as easy as they came out of the holiday break on a three-game skid. They fell to Barnstable, Bourne and D-Y before snapping the streak with a 44-12 win over Sturgis West at home last Friday. This Friday they also take on Nauset but will be on the Cape to play the Warriors. Their next home game is on Jan. 19 against Cape Cod Academy.
On Saturday, the wrestling team traveled to Salem where their high school hosted a meet with Wilmington, Marlborough, Greater Lowell Tech and the Vineyard. It was a tough outing for the Vineyarders as only Jack Zheng won for purple, he defeated Mason Correa from Marlborough in a 132-pound match.
