Five Vineyard ballers will lace up for a last run on the court this season as the Cape and Islands league boys and girls All Star games are set to take place Sunday at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center.
Juniors Delilah Oliver and Piper Blau along with seniors Nate Story, Josh Lake and Sam Zack will represent the Island in the event being held for the first time since the 2019-20 season.
Oliver, Story and Lake received All Star recognition for the second year in a row. Lake was also named the Most Valuable Player of the Maritime division and broke the Vineyard’s single-game scoring record with a 46-point clinic against Bishop Stang late in the regular season.
As a team, the boys were back-to-back Cape and Islands league champions while also losing at home only once in the past two years.
On the girls side of the ball, Oliver and Blau have been playing varsity basketball together since they were freshmen and have grown to be the leaders of the team. Oliver led the team in scoring with 155 points and Blau was second with 116.
Oliver also led the team in blocks, rebounds and minutes on the court. She played multiple positions from bringing the ball up the court to posting up beneath the rim. Coach Melissa Braillard said she was the glue that kept the team together.
This year Blau evolved her game from being not only a three point specialist to becoming a player who can drive the lane and finish at the rim or kick it to an open teammate for the shot. She also had one of her best games late in the season against the eventual division champions Monomoy.
“Both (Blau) and Delilah played a big role in that win,” Coach Braillard said. “Delilah did a great job taking care of the ball and Piper hit the shots when we needed them.”
The girls will take the court first on Sunday at 1:15 p.m. with the boys to follow at 3 p.m.
In other Vineyard high school sports news over the weekend, Camille Brand participated in the championship division of the high jump at the New Balance indoor track nationals in Boston. She placed 23rd overall with a leap of 1.62m
