Spring sports are back in action at the high school and the weather isn’t the only thing heating up on the Island as the baseball team thumped Nantucket 10-0 on opening day Saturday and kept it rolling for a 6-1 win over Dennis Yarmouth on Tuesday.
Against Nantucket, Lathrop Keene went 3-3 at the plate with two RBI and also pitched a scoreless inning with a strikeout. Charlie Porterfield was 2-2 with two runs scored, Hunter Johnson went 2-3 with two runs and an RBI and Wyatt Loughman got the win with two strikeouts on the mound.
Against the Dolphins the Vineyarders put up six in the first three innings and kept D-Y off the board until the sixth. Eli Bryant got the win with no runs allowed and three strikeouts. Johnson had another strong day at the plate going 2-3 with two RBI, a run scored and a walk. Nate Story also went 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Up next the boys travel to Harwich Monday to take on Monomoy. Their next home game is scheduled for April 12 against Barnstable at 3:15 p.m.
On Thursday, the softball team opened their season at home versus Mashpee.
The baseball team wasn’t the only squad to start the season against Nantucket, however, they were the only ones to beat them. Both boys and girls lacrosse lost to the Whalers Saturday with the boys playing at home and the girls on Nantucket. Next game for the boys team is Tuesday, April 9 at home against Barnstable.
The girls were able to right the ship in their next match-up as they defeated Monomoy 10-9 on the Cape on Tuesday. The Vineyarders jumped out to an early lead and held on for the win despite the Sharks making it close at the end. Ali Dyke netted a hat trick while Charlotte Scott and Lizzy Chvatal scored two goals each. Sylvi Carroll, Brooke Ward and Annabelle Metell each netted a goal as well.
On Thursday, the girls were scheduled to play D-Y, and on Saturday they take on Boston Latin Academy at home. Start time is 12:30 p.m.
Building off a successful indoor track season, the Vineyarders are looking forward to moving their talents outside and into the fresh air. They opened the season Monday with Monomoy and have a home meet scheduled for Friday versus D-Y beginning at 3 p.m.
The unified track team will also began their season this week welcoming Riverview to the Vineyard on Wednesday.
The sailing team, which had a very successful season last year finishing in the top ten of the NESSA fleet racing championship after finishing second in the O’Day qualifier, defeated Bishop Stang on Tuesday and faces Barnstable on Thursday.
Finally, the boys and girls tennis teams are looking to build off their postseason appearances last year as they both begin their seasons at home; both teams made it to the second round of the playoffs last year. On Monday, the girls battled Saint John Paul II but were defeated 0-5. On Saturday they have another shot at a win, with a home match against Newton North beginning at 12:30 p.m. The boys also play at home on Saturday against Apponequet starting at 3 p.m.
