Say Goodbye to Jupiter

The brightest planet in our evening sky is about to disappear, or for many of us, it is already gone. The brilliant planet Jupiter is getting so close to the western horizon after sunset you may miss it. Jupiter was a sentinel in our evening sky for so many many months, going back to autumn.

Jupiter is about to be hidden by the glow of the sun and won't be visible again until summer, when it appears in the morning sky. Certainly the earliest you'll see Jupiter is at the end of May, at dawn, in the morning sky.

Much of our evening skies are going to be different. Right now we are essentially with any planets to see. But this will change in the weeks ahead. The brightest of all planets, Venus will start showing up in our evening sky later in May.

All the visible planets are in our morning sky, but this will change as summer gets a better grip.. Mercury shows up in the west in our evening sky for a short time in June. Late night observers will see Saturn rising in the east.

Take a moment this weekend to watch sunset, look up afterwards when the sky darkens. See if you can spot Jupiter low in the western sky. And say "goodbye."
