The Vineyard boys tennis team is tearing up the court so far this spring. Off to a seven and two record to start the season, the Vineyarders are leading their division and are poised to sweep the Cape and Islands league as they prepare for the postseason.
Last week, the boys made three trips to the Cape for matches with Barnstable, Falmouth and Monomoy. MV brought home wins of 4-1, 5-0 and 4-1 with the Vineyard’s doubles tandems going undefeated.
Head coach Nicole Macy said her squad finds their success in being great teammates to one another. She also said they have been playing tennis together long before high school and know how to unlock the competitive edge that pumps everyone up before a match.
This week, the boys face Barnstable and Nauset at home. First, it’s the Red Hawks Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. then the Warriors Friday at 4 p.m.
The girls tennis team will also face Barnstable and Nauset this week except they will be on the road. Last week at home they earned their fourth and fifth wins of the season as they defeated the Red Hawks and the Falmouth Clippers at home 5-0 and 4-1.
In the first match with Barnstable, first singles Laina Dubin won 6-0, 6-1. At second singles Leah Thompson won 6-2, 6-1, and Zoe Treitman won third singles 6-0, 6-0. In doubles play, the Vineyard’s first pair of Sophia Balsas and Ellie Pennington won 6-1, 7-5 and the second pair, Ella Moran and Clementine Zeender won 6-1, 6-2.
Against Falmouth, Laina Dubin won the first singles match 6-1, 6-0 and Zoe Treitman won the third singles 6-2, 6-0. In doubles, Sophia Balsas and Ellie Pennington won the first match 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (6) and Ella Moran and Clementine Zeender won the second 6-3, 6-0.
The girls’ next home match is on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against Nantucket.
Last week the softball team kept their momentum rolling from the first-ever Noepe invitational softball tournament and notched wins against Cape Cod Tech in Harwich and then again on the road against Mashpee.
Against Cape Tech the girls won 23-8. Offensively they were fueled by a stellar performance at the plate by the Pitman twins Nala, who went 5-5, and Madis, who was 3-3. Kylee Brasefield earned the win on the mound for the Vineyarders.
Having just beaten Mashpee in the consolation game of the Noepe tournament, the girls were familiar with their second opponent last week. This time on their field the Vineyarders were victorious by an even wider margin and came home with a 28-14 win.
Up next are three games on their home diamond this week. First, it’s Saint John Paul II Wednesday at 3:15 p.m., then Sturgis East Friday at 3:15 p.m. and Boston Latin Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
On the lacrosse field, both the boys and girls teams had an up-and-down week but the highlight came from the boys squad who handed Monomoy just their second loss of the season last Friday on the road in a close 8-6 contest.
John Hoff led the offense with a hat trick and two assists. Bryce Cioffi scored twice, Liam Conley and Wyatt Nicholson had a goal and an assist each and Ben Kokoszka scored his first varsity goal. The Vineyarders also had a major boost from their goalie Peyton Tabares who made 27 saves in the victory.
The boys’ next game comes at home on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Weston.
The girls defeated Sturgis East on the Cape last Tuesday by a score of 8-2. Ali Dyke scored a hat trick while Annabelle Metell and Charlotte Scott scored twice and Lizzy Chvatal added to the final tally.
On Thursday the girls are home against Falmouth Academy with the first faceoff coming at 3 p.m.
The sailing team recently placed second in the district championship qualifier regatta at the Hyannis Yacht Club. The Vineyarders were only beaten out by Tabor Academy as they amassed 63 points on 11 top-three finishes.
They have also won their last three single meets against Nantucket 3-1, Old Rochester 4-0 and Saint John Paul II 3-0.
The track team is done with single school meets and are on to larger championship events. Most recently, Camille Brand did what she does best and took first place in the high jump at the Weston Twilight Invitational with a 5’4” jump.
Earlier that same evening, at the Lou Tozz Freshman-Sophomore Twilight Invitational hosted by Oliver Ames High School, Kaniel Morgan placed seventh in the discus with a 114-08 toss and Xeandre Miller came in 10th throwing the javelin 123-08.
Before the twilight invitationals, at the Division Five Relays in Seekonk, the Vineyard relay team of Brand, Caroline Bettencourt, Madison Mello and Alexa Schroeder came in fifth in the 1600m race with a time of 4:30.92. Mello also placed eighth in the shot put that day with a 9.62 toss.
Up next for the track team is the Coaches Invitational at Braintree High School this weekend.
