The Vineyard boys tennis team continued its dominant run in postseason play by sweeping Boston Latin Academy 5–0 Monday afternoon to advance to the quarter finals of the division three championship.
On Friday the team defeated Maimonides School 5–0 in the first round of the playoffs.
The Vineyarders finished the regular season with a 12-4 record and were the Cape and Islands League champions.
Co-captain Caleb Dubin, playing at second singles, was the first off the court Monday, defeating his opponent 6–2, 6-2.
Kyle Levy and Otis Forrester defeated their first doubles opponents just minutes later, also winning 6-2, 6-2.
Henry Wansiewicz and Tommy Flynn cinched the match with a win at second doubles.
“Doubles really stepped up and played offensively to take the wins,” coach Nicole Macy said after the match. “Caleb’s consistency won him second singles.”
Team co-captain Zak Potter at first singles and Kert Kleeman at third singles both took the long way to the finish line. Potter’s first set was still in its final rounds — after nearly an hour and a half of play — when Dubin’s match finished up.
“We had amazing comebacks,” Coach Macy said, “Zak Potter especially...down in the first set to win it in a tiebreaker.”
Kleeman also won his match in a tiebreaker round after splitting sets with his Boston Latin opponent.
Coach Macy said the team needs to work on shoring up some of its regular season shortfalls as it prepares for its quarter final match.
“As always, it comes down to first serves and unforced errors for us,” she said. “We need to up the former and eliminate the latter.”
The fifth seeded Vineyarders are slated to play next on Saturday at 4 p.m. against the fourth seeeded Apponequet Regional High School.
In other playoff action, the girls tennis team lost to Danvers on the road 3-2 last week. Danvers came into the match with a 17-1 record on the season but the Vineyarders gave them all they had and almost came away with an upset victory.
Coach Bill Regali said the girls had a good season and that they loved playing together. He said there’s lots to build on for next season as well.
Girls lacrosse advanced to the second round of playoffs with a 10-2 win over beat Greater New Bedford Tech at home, but lost in the second round to Foxborough 17-6.
Head Coach Lauren Pineau said the team showed a lot of growth throughout the season.
“We became more cohesive as a team as the season went on, there was a lot more teamwork and knowing how to utilize each others positions and skills,” Coach Pineau said. “Not only have I seen the improvement from the beginning of the season to the end, other members of our lacrosse community have recognized the growth our girls achieved this season.”
Boys lacrosse also ended their playoff run last week with a first-round loss to Burlington on the road 17-5.
