The favorite meteor shower of the year takes place Sunday night. The Perseid Meteor Shower reaches its peak in the earliest hour of Monday morning, just after midnight. The best time to look is after midnight, but you can look up throughout evening on Sunday and into Monday.. The Perseid meteor shower can produce upwards of 50 meteors an hour, though we've never seen that many. It is just a great meteor shower at the best time of the year, when it is fairly warm outside.
Find a dark area where you have a lot of sky overhead. As the evening progresses your best chance of seeing meteors is looking towards the northeast, where the constellation Perseus is rising in the east. The meteors will appear to radiate from that constellation, however you can see a meteor anywhere.
The first quarter moon will set around midnight, so there will be nothing to impinge on the meteor shower.
If you are up that late in the night get a view of the planets Jupiter and Mars really close together rising in the east well after 2 o'clock. Look at 3 o'clock for an impressive sight of them above the eastern sky. They are in the zodiacal constellation Taurus. Add those two planets to your meteor watching and you'll have a memorable evening.
