I have been coming to the Vineyard every summer since 1956, when I was a young child and my parents rented the Candlemakers Cottage on Cooke street in Edgartown. No matter where I lived in the winter, coming back to the Island has always felt like I was coming home to a place where I belonged and felt warmly welcomed.
Several weeks ago, I was again reminded of what a special place the Vineyard is. My husband, Kent, and I drove down the beach access road next to First Bridge on Beach Road to watch the derby fishing. Our old Jeep got stuck in the sand and several local fishermen came over right away to help us get our car out. But the Isuzu refused. However, a wonderful Vineyarder, Kevin Morris, refused to leave us stranded there and spent the next several hours helping us in many ways, including helping me deal with AAA and helping Kent navigate with his walker in the sand. Kevin gave us refreshments and refreshing conversation and got the Jeep out.
It truly warms my heart to have met an Islander who took the time to help and comfort us without thinking of himself.
Thank you Kevin.
