It is the end of October and the flip flops are still out and on. Yes, it is chilly in the morning and the temperature plummets at 3 p.m. like clockwork, but the in-between hours have been just beautiful. Although it is making it difficult to do the changeover of summer clothes to the fall and winter wardrobe.

I was going to my friend Diane Welch’s house on Sunday to meet her new kittens. On my way up the West Tisbury Road, I noticed a lady who was collecting the trash along the side of the road. I thought I should call out the window ,but I did not want to scare her as her back was to me.
I met the new kitties—Ringo and Fluffy—who are only nine-weeks-old and are so cute and still getting acquainted with their new home and cuddling up with Uncle Baylie, Diane’s son’s dog. We chatted and had lunch. I was on my way home, as I drove down the road, I noticed the same lady I had seen earlier behind an SUV, loading three big yellow bags of trash that she had collected. So, I hope she reads this column so I can say thank you, as we all should.
With the weather so nice, we have started to wrap the pergola at work with white lights for Christmas in Edgartown. People might think it is too early, but it is easier when it is 60 degrees out rather than 40 degrees and windy. But if you think about it, Christmas in Edgartown is only seven weeks away and there is a lot of preparation to be done. The pergola alone takes almost two full cases of white lights and lots of staples and about four to five days to complete. The order has gone in for all the greens and poinsettias for the holiday, so I guess I had better get some shopping done.
For all the people interested in ghost and haunted houses, the Edgartown Library will have (online) Haunted Lighthouses of New England with Jeremy D’Entremont on Monday, Oct. 28 from 7 to 8 p.m. Lighthouses and ghost stories often seem to go hand-in-hand.
