Editors, Vineyard Gazette;

I would like to thank the EMTs and rescue team who helped in my rescue at State Beach last Friday, Oct. 18. But above all I want to thank Robert (Bear) Harding, fellow kitesurfer/wing foiler/sailor who saved my life.

Over the many years, I also have had the occasion to rescue persons in some very bad situations on the water, but nothing this dire. You never know if you have what it takes in that ultimate moment of truth. On that day, we found out that Bear certainly does. He was the absolute right person with the right skill set and training, and absolute selflessness to meet that ultimate moment. I am forever grateful.

I am also indebted to Quinn Keefe who was in his wet suit on the beach and immediately started swimming out, and to Scott Dibiaso who dialed 911 and then grabbed a surf board and paddled out to help get me in. Scott is the captain of the beautiful schooner Juno in Vineyard Haven, and Bear is the first mate.

I am so grateful to be a part of this Island community and the highly competent watermen/waterwomen community especially. See you on the water.

With sincere gratitude.

Nevin Sayre
