As I understand it, DCR officials are proposing that 32 acres of eastern white pine be clear-cut at the Manuel F. Correllus State Forest for a project that aims to provide suitable habitat to local rare and endangered species.

Given the grand scale, you have to wonder whether the species in question can last long enough to benefit from the project. Remember the Heath Hen? It went extinct despite efforts at the very same Manuel F. Correllus State Forest.

Nevertheless, I have to feel sorry for species like the Eastern Whippoorwill and the Imperial Moth. They are at the brink of extinction and, like so many among us, they can’t find a place to live.
