The year’s first full moon is called the Wolf Moon. But fear not, wolves are not on the agenda next week when the moon is full. Instead, owls are the main event, thanks to Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary’s Full Moon Owl Prowl.
The prowl takes place on Monday, Jan. 13, and will be led by Sydney Pigott, an experienced hand with owls. Ms. Pigott is the education coordinator and camp director at Felix Neck and has led the full moon tours for three years.
“We do them in the winter because there is better visibility and it’s quieter, making it more likely we can hear the owls,” she said.
The most abundant owl is the screech owl, Ms. Pigott said, and she will use a bird call to entice them.
The event starts with some education about the species of owls on the Island, and checking out the Felix Neck live owl cam of the resident barn owls.
“We time the walk so that hopefully the barn owls fly out of their box as it begins,” Ms. Pigott said.
The actual prowl is a short walk on some wooded trails.
“If we are super lucky we might see a great horned owl,” Ms. Pigott said.
But one owl that will not be prowling about during the full moon is the snowy owl. They are diurnal, Ms. Pigott said, meaning they are active in the daytime.
