Firefighters quickly put out a fire that had started in a home in Tisbury early Tuesday morning.

Tisbury fire crews were called to a two-family home at 301 Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road at 6:37 a.m. after the residents found smoke coming from the basement, said Tisbury fire Chief Patrick Rolston.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, which started near a water heater and dryer, in under 15 minutes, the chief said. The exact cause has yet to be determined.

Smoke damaged the house, but the fire didn’t push further into the building.

The residents, who called in the fire, were out safely when firefighters arrived and no one was hurt. Chief Rolston said the home needed to undergo an inspection for smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors before they could move back in.

Firefighters from Oak Bluffs and Edgartown, as well as Tisbury police, helped out at the fire.
