I learned today of the passing of Barbara Murphy, my beloved MVRHS Spanish teacher, and later my colleague and department chair, friend and fellow Up-Islander, mi querida.
I will always remember you telling Greg Scotten that I “just got back from studying in Salamanca.” Thus, with your loving, kind and direct blessing I became part of the MVRHS orbit to teach Spanish with you.
Your leadership and wisdom permeated my soul as you were my mentor and trainer. I remember the dinners we shared and how teaching was such a way of life — the best life. I remember how lobster was not your favorite, although you ate a lot of it. Your husband Chris was such a part of this beautiful experience and now I pray for his comfort because you two were inseparable.
Your daughters walked and grew in the dignity which you carried with you everywhere you went. You wore an embroidered denim that was such a great look on you. So real.
I will always remember you calling me “Dear” and “Jimmy”, even in front of Dr. Scotten and colleagues.
The Peace Train has come to carry you away on the Menemsha sunset. I will always appreciate what you did for me, and your kindness and strength towards others.
Hasta la Vista mi querida profesora. Te quiero, Barbara
