Firefighters extinguished a brush fire Sunday that burned about 1.5 acres of grass at Quansoo Beach.
The fire was caused by someone who was having a fire on the beach that later spread to the grass, said Chilmark fire Jeremy Bradshaw.
Both Chilmark and West Tisbury fire crews responded at about 7 p.m., and took utility task vehicles to reach the fire down by the beach.
“There was a delay in responding because Quansoo Road is having cable work done,” Mr. Bradshaw said. “It was on the beach side so there wasn’t really any hazards.”
There were no injuries and no buildings were in danger, Mr. Bradshaw said.
“Everything went well and we were prepared if it spread into the neighborhoods,” he said.
Mr. Bradshaw urged people to be cautious with the ongoing drought conditions on the Island.
“Be careful with open fires,” he said. “Everyone thinks because we’ve had rain...stuff’s pretty dry.”
