Firefighters quickly put out a fire in the basement of a home on Donalbain Close street in Edgartown on Monday afternoon.
Edgartown fire chief Alex Schaeffer said the homeowner reported leaving their home to go to the store and upon returning found that a door in their basement was hot to the touch. The homeowner exited the building and called the fire department.
“We were able to get there, assess the building as well, got into the basement and found that the room and contents were on fire,” Mr. Schaeffer said on the scene. “We extinguished that quickly and we were able to knock everything down with minimal damage.”
Mr. Schaeffer said the Oak Bluffs fire department arrived on the scene to help put out the fire, the cause of which is unknown. The Tisbury department assisted at the Edgartown fire station.
“It takes an entire village to put out a house fire,” Mr. Schaeffer said.
Mr. Schaeffer said that the damage was exclusive to one room and no one was injured. The cause remains under investigation.
