Major construction at the Woods Hole terminal is due to wrap up for the summer before Memorial Day, but work will continue inside the ticket and waiting room building, general manager Robert Davis told the port council Tuesday.

The multi-year terminal reconstruction is on track to be completed by the start of the 2026 season, Mr. Davis said.

On the Vineyard, the Steamship Authority’s Oak Bluffs terminal will open for the 2025 season May 13, he said.

Also Tuesday, the port council agreed to recommend that the boat line board of governors extend the so-called blue line — a standby program for Island vehicles registered with the SSA — through this summer, following a successful pilot that began in January.

The SSA has canceled same-day standby for all other vehicles, citing construction work in both Woods Hole and Vineyard Haven, although the latter project has since been postponed to the fall.

Director of shoreside operations Alison Fletcher said that while the blue line has been working well, some participants have not understood that it is based on available space aboard the ferries.

“It does not guarantee passage. It is standby,” Ms. Fletcher said.

Motorists from off-Island seeking same-day passage have so far been able to buy tickets at the terminal, she said, but that will change as the travel season ramps up.

The governing board is expected to vote on the blue line extension at its next meeting April 15.
