Next Level Chef contestant Ryan Scanlon, who first discovered his passion for cooking as a teenager at Alchemy in Edgartown, will return for a homecoming there later this month.
Mr. Scanlon continues to make his mark on the current Next Level Chef competition and remains in contention for the $250,000 prize on Gordon Ramsey’s hit show. Filming has wrapped but Mr. Scanlon’s final fate is still unkown to the public.
In the meantime, he will be bringing his talents back to the community that gave him his start. On Thursday, April 24 from 6 to 10 p.m., Mr. Scanlon returns to Alchemy for one night to cook alongside his mentor, owner and executive chef Christopher Stam.
“Coming back to the Island, where it all started for me, is a full circle moment...” Mr. Scanlon said. “To see familiar faces and to see my creation come out on a plate for them to enjoy is just going to be amazing.”
The menu for the night features five courses: a scallop crudo served with sea buckthorn gel, fire roasted cioppino with smoked mussels and fromage fraiche from Grey Barn, lobster mezzaluna, pan-seared black bass with a fennel and leak puree and for dessert, lemon verbena olive oil cake served with a basil sherbert.
The restaurant’s wine director, Meaghan Robinson, is curating pairings for the evening.
Mr. Scanlon said he wants the meal to reflect the character of the Vineyard and he crafted the menu to highlight local seafood.
“When working at Alchemy in the summertime, me and a bunch of guys, and sometimes even [Chef Stam], would have a little barbecue down on South beach,” Mr. Scanlon said. “We’d be catching oysters right there and shuck them right in the water. We’d eat them straight — no salt, lemon juice, nothing…”
