Many reports from my Island friends note that hummingbirds are returning to all our towns. Hopeful news!

In other good news, George Pimental has been appointed as the new Cape and Islands veterans outreach officer. George has already begun his work.

I never forget our artists. Daniel Waters still has his photography exhibit up at our Martha’s Vineyard Museum through May 3, and Rebecca Everett began her exhibit of paintings last weekend at the viewing space of the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society. Her opening will be on May 4 from 1 to 4 p.m.

In other forms of expression I must brag that my 17-year-old grandson, living in Rockford, Ill., has just finished his theatrical run in Chicago, the musical put on by his high-school. Dominic Leigh Clark caught the acting bug early. Your children might also. Our always bustling Vineyard Playhouse on Church street will be offering their summer camp, Summer Stars, as always. Register your kids now.

A new play, commissioned especially at the playhouse about our famous artist, Lois Mailou Jones, will have three performances on the Patricia Neal stage. The dates are May 15, 16 and 17. Reserve your tickets.

Sandy’s Fish and Chips opens back up on April 30! I remember when I would take my den of cub scouts there every Thursday for ice cream after our meetings.

Botanist and writer Holly Bellebuono will speak at the Katharine Cornell Theatre on May 5 about her new book on fairies, myths and legends.

More than 10 per cent of our library’s books have been moved to the library facility at 15 Church street. Most library events have been moved to Katharine Cornell Theatre. This allows construction of an expanded library at our spot at 200 Main street. Have patience!

Our DPW leader, Kirk Metell, also urges patience with the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven roadwork which will continue next week. Kirk is such a darling about keeping us informed.

Allan and Eileen Bemus are at their Island home now. They are enjoying the week and the weather.

This Island will miss Bob Douglas so much. Beautiful tributes are being written about him.

The birthday bandwagon pulled along Nicole Stagg Rizi, Nick Klingensmith and Jill Rosenkrantz on April 27. Many happy returns.
