This year, the race proceeds will be used to fund the operating expenses of Chappy Connect, a transportation service for older Chappy residents provided by the Edgartown Council on Aging in collaboration with Healthy Aging MV. With funds provided by last year’s Chappy Point to Point, Chappy Connect leased an all-electric VW ID-4 sedan and launched its operations last month. Pre-scheduled rides are offered for free to Chappy residents age 60 and older Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Rides are assigned first-come, first-served with companions welcome and can be use for the grocery store, pharmacy, medical appointments, Steamship Authority, to visit a friend, etc. Interested riders should call 508-627-4368 by 3 p.m. on Thursdays to schedule a ride for the following week.
When visiting the west coast in years past, I would stay on board the ocean liner Queen Mary. It’s located conveniently for day trips to Disney Land, the Aquarium of the Pacific and the Balboa Ferry, Chappy Ferry’s sister service. Many famous people traveled across the Atlantic on this iconic vessel. The ship’s gift shop offers literature about some of the most illustrious.
My favorite is The Wit and Wisdom of Winston Churchill. It’s a book of a thousand quotes, which I still flip through occasionally. The forward was written by Richard Nixon. Churchill was a pretty serious free world leader, insisting upon fighting Hitler to the death rather than bargaining as some of his fellow countrymen advised. He had a deep sense of irony and humor. One observation that is particularly apt these days regards his view on forms of government: “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.”
