There were a number of sightings of Northern Lights in this area of Southern New England. We've seen the photographs too. Northern Lights have been photographed on Nantucket, Cape Cod and down in Connecticut. Earlier this week we saw some really pretty pictures coming especially from our sister island Nantucket. Pictures are being taken with a simple handheld cellphone/camera.
The secret, it appears, is just being outside at the right time. Some sightings have been late in the evening. The ones that really caught our attention were in the hours before dawn. A key ingredient to being there is luck. Another key ingredient involves the weather.
This past week offered us clear skies, unencumbered by haze or clouds. The moon didn't seem to interfere too. The only surprise is that we've not yet heard reports or seen pictures from Martha's Vineyard.
We encourage you to try looking. Scientists are reporting an increase in the likelihood of Northern Lights being seen, tied to activity on the Sun. The sun is active this summer.
The Space Weather Prediction Center with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) does have a forecast website: You can easily Google the site.

There is no assurance it will work for us, but it certainly increases our chances of getting a view outside on the right night.
