For any dedicated impresario, organizing an event has a lot to do with getting to know the ins and outs of a performance space to decide who might fit well in that particular venue.
This was the task set for Jared Salvatore, recently appointed as Circuit Art’s new music programmer, as he worked to create a year-round music series designed to create concerts by local and national musicians in community spaces around the Island.
“I’ve definitely listened to more new music in the last five or six months since I’ve had this position than I have in forever,” Mr. Salvatore said, during an interview outside Rosewater Market, where he works as the manager.
The series began in late May with a performance by folk revivalist Tom Rush at the Strand Theatre in Oak Bluffs. Next up is four time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Emily King, who performs at the Strand on Friday, June 12. There will also be performances this summer at the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse, which merged with Circuit Arts in March, and the Old Whaling Church.
Brooke Hardman-Ditchfield, artistic director of the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse, said the merger created an opportunity for the organization to grow organically, adding music to its established schedule of movies and plays.
“We’re really thrilled that we are able to steward those two venues and add them to our family of places where we make art on the Vineyard,” said Ms. Hardman-Ditchfield.
Mr. Salvatore, a musician himself, quickly jumped at the opportunity to work with Circuit Arts. This spring he has also booked musicians for S&S Kitchenette and the recent Porchfest event in Edgartown.
“It all feels very experimental,” he said. “[Circuit Arts] is very willing to be like, yeah, let’s try some stuff, let’s try to reach out to whoever you want, and we’ll see if they can come, and then we’ll see how it goes, and we’ll adjust from there.”
The series is being sponsored by MVY Radio.
“We saw that Jared was putting together a really great list of national level acts and bringing them to the Island, so we wanted to be a part of that and make sure we let people know that this world-class talent is coming to our neighborhood,” said PJ Finn, the executive and program director at MVY Radio.
“Booking a series like Jared has is an art,” Mr. Finn continued. “I think it’s very hard to maintain a full-time music space, so it’s great that Circuit Arts is doing music shows, along with everything else that they do, with movies and plays.”
When looking for particular acts, Mr. Salvatore said he likes to find artists who say familiar things in unfamiliar ways.
“It’s been nice to have a little bit of creative flexibility in who we’re bringing,” he said. “I’m sure we’ll get weird here and there, you know, to try to keep things interesting.”
Mr. Salvatore said he is excited about creating more dedicated music venues on the Island, referencing storied spaces like the Hot Tin Roof, Nectar’s and Flatbread.
“Hopefully, at some point, we can grow this program to the place where we can bring something like that back to the Island,” said Mr. Salvatore. “We would love to do that.”
