Edgartown firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire that burned down a Chappaquiddick home in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Firefighters received a call reporting a house on Chappy was on fire at 2 a.m. After firefighters on Chappy saw the extent of the blaze, the department sent out calls for aid to neighboring departments.
The house was deemed a total loss, and crews worked to extinguish the fire before it spread to the nearby woods, the department wrote in a statement on Facebook.
No one was injured and the occupants of the home were able to make it out safely, the department wrote.
The fire triggered an extensive response from Island fire departments. Firefighters staged at Edgartown Memorial Wharf and worked with the Chappy Ferry to shuttle personnel and equipment across the channel, according to Edgartown's statement.
After firefighters doused the flames, a team was assigned to stand watch to make sure the fire didn’t reignite.
Edgartown did not say what caused the fire or the location of the blaze in the statement Thursday. Fire chief Alex Schaeffer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The department did thank Oak Bluffs, Tisbury and West Tisbury for providing aid, and the Chappy Ferry for helping with transportation.
“Please keep the homeowners in your hearts as they process this news,” the Edgartown department wrote.
