The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks continued to chew up and spit out opponents in July, and on Monday night clinched the Southern Division league title.
As of Wednesday, the Sharks were also just three wins off the all time record, with four more games to play. But the only record of importance to the organization comes with a trophy.
“This special group is ready to power through the playoffs,” said head coach Peyton Fuller.
General manager Russ Curran agreed.
“We set ourselves up this year by playing well all summer, and now in a position to set up our pitching for the ideally deep playoff run.”
The playoffs begin in early August.
The talented team was recently rewarded with seven All-Star game picks, along with head Coach Fuller and hitting coach Ty Long.
The game took place last weekend in Sanford, Maine, with Jackson Taylor starting at third base, Austin Pierzynski at catcher and Kevin Hall Jr. in centerfield. Jackson Roper, Ryan Renfroe, Nick Rubino and Wesley Scott were picked as reserves.
Former Sharks also heard their names called on July 11 and 12 in the MLB Draft. In all, eight recent Sharks players signed contracts, most notably Chris Hacopian, who hit .370 over 39 games for the 2024 squad. He was chosen 11th overall in the draft by the Washington Nationals, with a signing bonus of $5.7 million.
Also drafted from the 2024 team were Justin LeGuernic, 180th to the Kansas City Royals, and Carsten Sabathia, 611th to the Milwaukee Brewers. Andrew Berg signed a free agent deal with the Chicago White Sox, and Lance Trippel signed with the Detroit Tigers.
Shark tank heroes Max Kaufer, Brayden Martin and Rohan Lettow, of the talented 2025 squad, were selected as well. Martin was chosen by the Toronto Blue Jays with the 342nd pick, Lettow went to the Pittsburgh Pirates at 348, and fan favorite Kaufer went to the the Texas Rangers at 537.
Gavin Van Kempen, who shined in over 22.1 innings of work in 2023, was selected 373rd by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
