A man was brought to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital Friday after he and four other people got caught in a riptide off Long Point Wildlife Refuge.

Rangers with the Trustees of Reservations, which owns and manages the beach along West Tisbury’s south shore, pulled the man from the water, a Trustees spokesperson said Friday afternoon.

The man was unconscious and not breathing, said public relations director Mary Dettloff. 

The man was part of a group of five that had got stuck in the riptide. The other four made it to beach with the assistance of the rangers and other beachgoers, according to Ms. Dettloff. 

In a joint statement, West Tisbury police, fire and Tri-Town Ambulance officials said they were notified of the people in distress at about 3:47 p.m. The departments, along with lifeguards from South Beach all assisted the Trustees.

The Trustees did not know the status of the man.

The conservation nonprofit announced Saturday that Long Point would be closed for the day after the incident. 

"At this time, our priority is supporting the efforts of the community and the well-being of all visitors and staff," the Trustees wrote on social media.
