Sengekontacket Pond is back open to shellfishing nearly two months after the state closed it due to a heavy rainstorm and flooding.

On Friday, the Oak Bluffs shellfish department announced that the water is clean enough for shellfishing to reopen on both the Oak Bluffs and Edgartown sides of the pond after tests came back clean from the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries.

The state closed the pond to shellfishing on July 8, along with Lagoon Pond, Lake Tashmoo and Vineyard Haven harbor.

Because flooding can cause contaminants such as heavy metals, fertilizer and feces to enter the ponds and shellfish’s systems, the mollusks can be unsafe to eat for a long time after a major flooding event, Oak Bluffs shellfish constable Donovan McElligatt told the Gazette last month.
