Tonight’s gibbous moon appears near the bright planet Jupiter and the brilliant red star Antares. All three form a tight triangle in the zodiacal constellation Scorpius, in the southern sky.
The moon appears above the two. The distance from us for these three objects is amazing. The moon is about a quarter of a million miles away. Jupiter is 400 million miles away. Antares is 619 light years away.
The three set in the southwestern sky at near midnight.
Three nights from tonight, on Monday, the moon advances into the zodiacal constellation Sagittarius and appears near the planet Saturn. Saturn is nowhere near as bright as Jupiter. But it is one of the brightest objects in that part of the sky.
On Tuesday night we have the Full Moon, the Fisherman’s Moon and it resides in the zodiacal constellation Capricornus.
