It was the Alan Burnsed and Matt Chamberlain show Sunday night at the Shark Tank as the Sharks topped the New Bedford Bay Sox 13-4.
With two men on and the game tied at one in the third, Burnsed dug into the batter’s box and smashed a three-run moon-bomb that soared over the fence in left-center and landed on Sanderson avenue.
In the fourth Chamberlain (or Chambo as the Sharks faithful call him) scaled the center field fence reaching way up to rob the Bay Sox of a homer and any momentum that might have come with it.
Burnsed struck again in the seventh for his seventh round tripper of the year with a laser to center that followed a two-run Kai Nelson blast, his second in as many games, that clipped the scoreboard on its way down.
Saturday night the squad traveled to Danbury to take on the Westerners in a contest that turned into yet another display of firepower by the Sharks.
The Vineyard hit six dingers on their way to a 15-6 triumph.
After falling to the Vermont Mountaineers 6-4 Friday morning, making up the game that had been rained out the night before, the Sharks bounced back from their fourth straight loss with a comeback 5-4 win Friday night against the Upper Valley Knighthawks.
Down 4-2 in the seventh, Burnsed stepped up to the plate with two runners on base and the opportunity to give his team some momentum they desperately needed. With one swing of the bat, Burnsed flexed some opposite-field power and lifted the ball over the fence in right, giving the Sharks the lead,
In the eighth, the Nighthawks threatened to even the score with a two-out double with a man on, but a relay in from center by Chamberlain to first basemen Nick Oar then to catcher Nick Raposo ended the inning — preserving the Sharks lead.
In the ninth, the Sharks unleashed Thomas Spinelli, a lefty from Ocala, Fla., on the Nighthawks. He promptly struck out the first two batters he faced, then got a ground out to secure his first save of the season and pull his team out of their funk.
Meanwhile, the New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star rosters were released on Sunday. The Sharks will be well represented at the Montpelier Recreation Field this coming Sunday as Sharks’ manager Jay Mendez leads the southern division’s unit.
Alan Burnsed will start the game in left field, while Dan Chamberlain, Nick Raposo, Nander De Sedas, Jackson Raper and Nathan Tiller are all expected to contribute off the bench.
Burnsed leads the southern division in runs batted in with 36 and is tied for the second-most home runs in the division. Chamberlain boasts the best batting average on the Sharks, hitting .331 on the year and currently leads the southern division in hits with 45.
The Sharks will look to keep their new winning streak alive when they travel to South Kingstown, R.I., Tuesday to face the Ocean State Waves.
They return home Wednesday for another round with the New Bedford Bay Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
