The deer warning sign may no longer be present on State Road as you enter Aquinnah but be prepared, there are deer everywhere. There were 10 deer on the road early Monday morning. Perhaps they were out grazing as the temperature was only 30 degrees.
During the month of November, the Aquinnah Public Library will have a Native American Heritage book display. Friends of Aquinnah Public Library will have all day coffee and conversation at the library on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the winter. On Thursday, Nov. 21 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. the book club will discuss There, There by Tommy Orange which is an interesting read for many in the community.
Trick or Treating went on as usual on Oct. 31 in Aquinnah. All the little Vanderhoop children showed up in five vehicles. Upon asking Golden Sunshine Vanderhoop for a treat he gladly passed me his empty box of candy Dots. Wise little boy at five years old. In the old days we all met at the town hall where we bobbed for apples in large aluminum basins, tried to eat the donuts that were hanging from a string, had a large potluck that the community attended, and then did a little trick or treating.
I am so glad I made it to the final performance of Our Town at the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse. It was a wonderful performance by so many of the cast, many of whom I even know. Sorry if you missed it but hopefully it will be performed again soon.
Jason Widdiss and his son Carl returned home on Friday after trick or treating at Dr. Joseph and Lynn Harrington’s home in Andover. He was accompanied by Brian Vanderhoop White. They made the trek to Andover when it was reported that Halloween would be canceled on Oct. 31 on the Island due to the weather.
Get well wishes to Sabrina Luening who is a patient at Massachusetts General Hospital. Ben DeForest will host a benefit for Sabrina at the Cardboard Box on Circuit avenue in Oak Bluffs on Saturday, Nov. 9 with doors opening at 4 p.m. Music for the benefit will be arranged by Don Groover who performs on occasion at Cliffhangers. It was one year ago this weekend that Sabrina sang at the fundraiser for Don Groover as he was undergoing medical treatment. There will be a silent auction for all to enjoy in support of Sabrina or contribute to a Facebook page in her name.
My sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Karen Kukolich who passed away at her Edgartown home a week ago. Fond memories of meeting Karen on her first day at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital in 1978 in the physical therapy department. Karen was a vital member of the Vineyard community, particularly fond of fishing and she participated in the John Havlicek Genesis Fund Fishing and Golf Tournaments. For many years she was the ace skeet shooter at the Rod and Gun Club. Another important part of her activities included being a member of the USCG Auxiliary 11-09 where on occasion her culinary skills delighted the crew at USCG Station Menemsha. Karen will be greatly missed by many across the Island. Her memorial service will be held in the spring.
Happy birthday wishes to Gabriella Camilleiri on Nov. 9.
