The distinctive Greek revival building at 15 Church Street in Edgartown that was formerly the office of Mindoro Real Estate will soon host a new business.
Susanna Herlitz-Ferguson, the owner of MV Salads in Oak Bluffs, said she plans to open Martha’s Vineyard Botiga, a clothing and cookware store.
A West Tisbury resident, Ms. Herlitz-Ferguson opened MV Salads in 2019. The salad bar won best new restaurant in 2020 and best vegetarian meal in 2021 in the Martha's Vineyard Magazine's Best of the Vineyard competition.
MV Botiga will sell clothes emblazoned with the MV Salads logo as well as the shop’s signature salad dressing, MV the Dressing, Ms. Herlitz-Ferguson said. In addition to hawking her own goods, Ms. Herlitz-Ferguson said she wants to showcase other Island businesses by selling cookbooks and photography.
“We’re trying to sell things that are all about Martha’s Vineyard,” she said.
She plans to open the store Memorial Day weekend, after making minor renovations to the building, including a fresh coat of paint, new subway tiles and new wallpaper.
“Everything is cosmetic,” Ms. Herlitz-Ferguson said of the renovations.
With its signature Greek revival facade, the small building dates to 1845 and is listed in MACRIS, the state historic building database. It served as a post office in the late 19th century and in the 1970s housed a law office. The property was purchased by SevenBay Real Estate LLC, which Ms. Herlitz-Ferguson is listed as manager, on April 20 from Mindoro owner Harriet Hoar for $1.1 million.
“It’s a beautiful historical building and we are just going to make it look even prettier. We’re very respectful of the town of Edgartown,” Ms. Herlitz-Ferguson said.
The businesswoman said she knew she wanted to open a second location to sell merchandise shortly after her first season running MV Salads. But the pandemic put that plan on the back burner. She first saw the property in December of last year and decided to buy it.
“We just got the keys yesterday,” she said, one day after the sale had closed.
The new store will also have its own version of the MV Salads rock wall, a collection of rocks dangling from the ceiling forming the shape of the sun, she said.
“All these people — Islanders, tourists, famous people — pose in front of that rock wall and it’s going to look exactly the same here in Edgartown,” Ms. Herlitz-Ferguson said.
While she has not thought much beyond getting the store up and running in the next three weeks, she said the tentative plan is to keep the store open through the shoulder seasons. She has not ruled out staying open year-round if she can find staff.
“I’m all for staying open as long as possible,” she said.
