In one giant leap for Vineyard athletics, Camille Brand punched her ticket to the indoor track national championship last week as she sprung 5‘4” to qualify in the high jump.
Her coach, Joe Schroeder, said before the meet last Tuesday she had been battling an illness that kept out of the last few competitions, as well as interrupted her training. But she returned stronger than ever for latest Cape and Islands meet and broke her school record.
Brand is one of only a few jumpers in the country to qualify for the event so far, which takes place on March 7-9.
Some of the other highlights from the most recent Cape and Islands meet include Madison Mello throwing the shotput 35’06.5” for another first-place finish. She also has a chance to qualify for nationals in the coming weeks with just a few more feet needed to make the cut.
Additionally, Kaniel Morgan placed second for the boys in the shot put with a 34’09.5” toss. Rodeo Purves-Langer came in second in the mile with a 5:03.61 time, Broden Vincent finished fourth in the 1000 meter at 3:11.19 and Brand also came in third in the 300 meter at 46.91.
The boys basketball team also had a big week, bouncing back from their loss to Nantucket at the TD Garden. On Friday, the team defeated Cape Cod Academy 80-38, and on Monday, the boys beat Abington on the road 63-54. Josh Lake led the team on Monday in scoring with 21 while his teammates put on a defensive clinic. Freshman Landon Lepine had seven blocks, Sam Zack nabbed seven steals and Nate Story added five steals and 17 points.
Up next, the boys take on Monomoy Friday on the road before returning home Sunday when they square off with Saint Mary’s of Lynn at 2 p.m. The Vineyarders are currently seventh in the Division Three power rankings.
On the girls side of the ball, the wins have been harder to come by. Last Tuesday they played a close one against Saint John Paul II but came up short, losing 47-43. Then on Friday, they were defeated at home by Cape Cod Academy 41-27 before falling to Abington on the road Monday 69-44. Up next for the Vineyarders, Monomoy comes to the Island Friday for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
The girls hockey team had a disappointing result in the Nan Rheault tournament where they lost to some of the best teams in Massachusetts. Then, after a loss to Falmouth, they returned to the win column by defeating Boston Latin Academy at home on Sunday.
Isabella Blake put the Vineyard on top in the first period but Purple found themselves in a 2-1 hole following the second intermission. Eleanor Mone tied the score at two apiece with a put-back off a rebound she cleaned up on a breakaway attempt. Then, with a minute left, Ava Mikos batted in the puck out of mid-air to take the lead and secure the Vineyarders’ seventh win of the season. Up next, the girls take on Dennis-Yarmouth on the Cape Saturday.
The boys hockey team faced a tough squad in Nauset last week and were shut out 6-0. Then, on Saturday, in a gritty, back-and-forth contest against Falmouth, Liam Conley scored a tying goal with the Vineyard’s goalie pulled in the final minute to send the game into overtime. The Clippers prevailed, though, with a final score of 2-1.
The swim team faced Nantucket at home on Friday and the boys added another win to their record, while the girls came up short against the Whalers. Some of the highlights for the Vineyard swimmers included a new school record for the boys 200-yard medley relay squad — Andy Carr swam the backstroke in 29.87 seconds, Simon Hammarlund the breaststroke in 33.42 seconds, Kaua De Assis the butterfly in 26.04 seconds and Emmett Silva the freestyle in 25.23. Their combined time of 1:54:99 was four seconds faster than the old record.
Additionally, De Assis qualified for the state championship in the 50 freestyle and Paula Geschke also qualified for the state championship in the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke. Geschke set two new school records with her qualifying times of 2:20.49 and 1:03.31.
“There was some very fast competitive swimming for both the boys and girls and both have continued improving with more personal best times,” Coach Jennifer Passafiume said.
