An Edgartown man is facing several charges after he allegedly crashed a car into a utility pole in Menemsha Monday, leaving nearly 200 people without power.
John Carbon, 18, was charged with operating under the influence, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stay in marked lanes and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, according to Chilmark police.
Police and fire officials say Mr. Carbon was driving an Audi A4 and lost control on North Road, crashing into the utility pole at about 5:30 a.m.
Neither Mr. Carbon nor a passenger in the vehicle were injured. Police said a passerby saw the two flee the vehicle, but they were located a short time later.
When emergency responders reached the scene, the live wires were creating small explosions. The pole had landed on the vehicle, causing major damage.
About 180 customers lost power due to this crash, according to the Eversource outage map. Power was restored by the afternoon.
Mr. Carbon pleaded not guilty in Edgartown District Court to the charges Monday and was released on personal recognizance.
