Winter sports are back in action at the high school as the Vineyard’s student athletes ramp up for basketball, hockey, indoor track, wrestling and swimming.
Last year there were triumphs all around for the Vineyarders as the boys and girls hockey teams and the boys basketball team made it to the second round of the playoffs. Boys basketball won the Cape and Islands League for the second year in a row, the boys swim team also secured a Cape and Islands League title, and Camille Brand of the indoor track team competed in the high jump at the highest level; the New Balance national indoor track and field championships in Boston.
Scrimmages have already taken place but the winter season officially gets underway starting Thursday with the indoor track team facing Falmouth and girls basketball playing at home against Falmouth Academy.
The indoor track team conducts all their Cape and Islands League meets at Wheaton College in Norton. They will also travel to Boston and Roxbury for events at the Track at New Balance and The Reggie Lewis Center.
This year, the girls’ basketball team has a new head coach, Mary Korba. Tipoff is at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
The boys basketball team’s first game isn’t until Tuesday, Dec. 17, playing at home against Nauset. Tipoff is at 6:30 p.m. While they may have lost some of their more prominent scorers from last year, the younger guys can now take the reins and step into the spotlight. It should be another exciting season for the Vineyarders as they defend their title of league champions.
On Saturday, the swim team and the wrestling team travel to Sandwich for their first meets of the season. For swimming, it’s the relay carnival with multiple Cape and Islands League teams. The wrestlers will also be taking on Sandwich along with other schools in their first contest.
The swim team will have their first home meet against Barnstable on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 3 p.m. at the YMCA pool.
Also on Saturday, the girls hockey team takes on Boston Latin at 2 p.m. on home ice, while the boys hockey team heads to Nantucket to clash with the Whalers.
Girls hockey also has a new head coach this year, Mallory Watts. The team has already had some scrimmage action, as Plymouth, Lincoln Sudbury and Needham came to the Island last weekend for a preseason round-robin tournament.
Against Plymouth the girls won 3-1. Abby Geary, Mackenna Metell and Ava Mikos all netted goals in the win. Needham proved to be a tough task though as the Vineyarders fell 7-3 to the Rockets. Lincoln Sudbury blanked the Vineyarders 5-0.
Boys hockey also welcomed three teams to this Island last weekend as they ironed out the kinks in their offense and tightened the screws of their defense. Arlington Catholic, Oyster River and Lexington all trekked to the Island and the Vineyarders went 2-1 against their competition.
In the first game, Arlington Catholic got the better of MV 4-1. Then, against Oyster River, the boys triumphed 4-2 as Adrian Alberghini, Donnie Gregory, Will Baliunas and Jason Alton found the back of the net. And finally, against Lexington, Nate Averill flexed a hat trick while Hunter Johnson and Griff Callahan also put points on the board in the Vineyard’s 5-0 win.
The team plays away against Nantucket on Saturday. The puck drops at 2 p.m.
