The RISE Vineyard Performing Arts is hosting its 15th annual holiday show Season’s Greetings: A Holiday Dance Celebration on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Performances will be at the Performing Arts Center (PAC).

For director Jil Matrisciano, the show is the culmination of hard work and spreading holiday cheer in the community.

“The holiday show is what I like to describe as our labor of love,” she said. “It is all homegrown. Fifteen years ago we decided we wanted to do something around the holiday season that was a little different from the traditional Nutcracker.”

The show highlights a variety of songs and dance styles, never looking the same each year.

“We try to transform the PAC into a winter wonderland and Christmas magic on stage,” Ms. Matrisciano said. “We try to honor all traditions. This year, we have a piece about Hanukkah and Kwanzaa and Christmas and sometimes we will acknowledge different countries. So we embrace all traditions around the holidays.”

Proceeds from the performances benefit the RISE Above Access Program, which offers scholarships to RISE families who are experiencing financial hardship.

“I want people to know that the money that they are spending on their ticket is actually benefiting a child,” Ms. Matrisciano said. “It’s a great way for us to be able to pass on the love to our families who need it.”

Though choreography may change, other parts of the show are passed down year after year.

“All of the costumes are handmade and some of them show up every year, some of them make guest appearances,” she said. “They have been handed down from generation to generation. It’s fun now for girls in high school to see the costumes on the little ones that they wore when they were little.”

Ms. Matrisciano is proud of how the show has become part of the fabric of the community during the holidays.

“It’s cool that something that started as a fun and exciting performance opportunity for kids has turned into this community-supported effort that actually spreads Christmas cheer and also benefits families on the island that need the support,” she said.
