We’ve entered the thick of the winter sports season at the high school and the boys hockey team is leading the way with six wins so far.
After falling to Barnstable 2-1 last week in their first loss of the season, the boys bounced back against Lowell 5-0 at the Tsongas Center on Saturday. Holden Brew secured the shutout in net as Donnie Gregory scored twice and Sol Donnelly, Teddy Pacheco and Hunter Johnson also lit the lamp for the Vineyard. The goal by Johson put him in the 100-point club over his career, joining teammate Nate Averill, who achieved the milestone in December.
Over the holiday break, the boys won once and tied twice at the Heuchling and Swift Memorial Tournament in New Hampshire. They also took down Saint John Paul II 4-3 in a big divisional clash. Up next is a tough task in the 7-0-1 Nauset Warriors on Thursday at home. With a win, the Vineyarders would receive a big boost to their playoff standing and put the Cape on notice of their prowess. The puck drops at 4:30 p.m.
On the girls side of the rink, the Vineyarders piled up the goals against Barnstable on the Cape Saturday in a 10-2 shellacking. Mackenna Metell netted a hat trick, Reese Malowski and Elle Mone scored twice, while Abby Geary, Madelyn Crowell and Hannah Wansiewicz also scored in the winning effort.
In game one of a three-game homestand this week, the girls fell to Nauset 5-1 with their lone goal coming from Malowski. On Wednesday they play Sandwich at 4:30 p.m. and then on Friday Milton comes to the Island for a 5:30 p.m. puck drop.
