The first Earth Day took place in 1970, starting a long tradition of pausing to care for Mother Earth. Here on the Vineyard, the Island celebrates its 33rd Earth Day with a host of activities on Saturday, April 19, including a beach clean-up and an after-party at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum.

Vineyard Conservation Society has spearheaded the beach clean-up, which runs from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Pick a beach, any beach, and give it some love in the company of community.

There is no preparation necessary, simply step up for your favorite beach by showing up. Vineyard Conservation Society will provide bags and gloves and give you a lunch ticket for later at the museum.

The party at the museum is from noon to 3 p.m. Trash collection awards will be given out, food will be eaten, touch tanks and games will abound.

Twenty conservation groups will also be on hand to help educate and offer volunteer opportunities for helping out all year long. After all, the Earth needs a lot more help than just one day can provide.
