The boys’ basketball and hockey teams extended their win streaks this week as league play continued for the Vineyarders. Though the girls’ teams split their games, all of the varsity squads hold winning records at the season midpoint.

Boys’ Basketball

The Vineyard train kept rolling this week, with the team taking home wins against Norton, Bourne and Coyle-Cassidy and moving to a 9-1 record (2-1 in league play).

The team came out strong last Thursday against Norton, scoring 25 points in the first quarter to Norton’s 14, but their opponents recovered to pull within two points by the end of the third. The Vineyarders rallied to take home the win 65-60. Junior Jack Roberts led the team with 22 points, while senior captain Peter Keaney had 11 points and six steals. Seniors Charlie Everett and Ryan Fisher had ten points each.

Roberts turned in 21 points against Bourne in Sunday’s 79-59 win. Keaney notched 18 with four steals, while Everett had 14 points and nine rebounds.

The boys defeated Coyle-Cassidy, 99-67, on Tuesday, with senior Izak Browne leading the scoring (19 points).

League play continues with a home game today at 4:30 p.m. against Bishop Stang and a Tuesday away match with Bishop Feehan.

Boys’ Hockey

The team took home a trifecta of wins this week, soundly defeating two league opponents and taking a close 3-2 win over Dennis-Yarmouth. The boys remain undefeated in the EAC and are 9-2 overall.

Down 3-1 after the first period in last Friday’s matchup against Bishop Feehan, the Vineyarders turned in five goals, including a Tyson Araujo hat trick in the second period to seal the 8-4 victory. A particularly rough third period saw a spate of penalties on both sides, including a major against Feehan after Vineyard junior Max Davies had to be taken to the hospital following a knockout elbow (Davies was released from the hospital with a neck sprain). The Vineyard scored two more goals in the third, with Feehan answering just once.

On Wednesday, the team defeated EAC opponent Somerset, 8-1. They travel to Minnechaugh High tomorrow and will continue league play on Wednesday with a home game against Coyle-Cassidy at 4:30 p.m.

Girls’ Hockey

The girls took a rough 9-0 loss to mainland powerhouse Barnstable on Wednesday, and look to rebound in two weekend games—a league matchup with Boston Latin tomorrow at 1 p.m. and an away game at Sandwich on Sunday. They rematch with league opponent Quincy/North Quincy in an away game on Wednesday. The team is now 5-4 and 3-1 in their league.

The Vineyarders hosted the 11th Annual Nan Rheault Tournament last weekend, with teams visiting from Sciutate, Peabody and Wilmington. Senior captain Celia Mercier drew first blood in the girls’ opening game against Scituate on assists from cocaptain Maggie Johnson and sophomore Emily Hammett, but the Sailors tied it up in the second period on a power play. Scituate scored again in the second on a screen shot; despite outshooting their opponents in the third period, the Vineyard was unable to find the back of the net and lost 2-1.

The varsity team rebounded the next day to defeat Peabody 6-1 and place third in the tournament. Goals came from Mercier (hat trick) and fellow seniors Lily Gazaille, Rilla Hammett and Callie Jackson.

Scituate took home the tournament’s top prize, winning the championship match against Wilmington 2-0.

The JV Vineyarders defeated Scituate 7-2, with sophomore Alex Clark scoring a hat trick.

Girls’ Basketball

The Vineyarders are 5-4 after splitting their games against Norton and league opponent Coyle-Cassidy.

Senior Maggie Riseborough scored 17 points and had 18 rebounds in the Vineyarders’ 48-32 win over Norton last Thursday. Juniors Kendall Robinson and Katie Stewart scored eight and 12 points, respectively. Head coach Lisa Stewart praised the team’s strong offensive effort and aggressive defense.

The team battled EAC rival Coyle Cassidy to a 35-all tie in the third quarter during Tuesday’s game. The tide of the game shifted after Riseborough had to leave the game after a collision and fall prompted concern over possible neck injuries (after being taken to the hospital, Riseborough checked out with no problems), and the Vineyard was unable to keep up their previous momentum, falling 52-40.

Junior Jennie Lindland scored 16 points and had seven steals, Riseborough scored seven points, and Robinson turned in six points. Coach Stewart was pleased with the team’s ability to keep up with Coyle, a team that went to state championships last year.

EAC play continues for the girls this week, with the team taking on Bishop Stang in an away game today and playing Bishop Feehan at home Sunday at 2 p.m.
