Michael S. Ovios, 65, died unexpectedly at Massachusetts General Hospital on March 31, surrounded by his loving family.

Michael was born in New York city and attended the New York School of Printing, SUNY-Oswego, and received his master’s degree from Cambridge College in Art Education.

For over 35 years, he taught at the Tisbury Elementary School, where he passed on to generations of students his love of the arts, sculpture, theatre and industrial arts, including wood shop and ceramics.

Michael always found time to pursue his personal creativity as a sculptor, and was professionally recognized for his artistic talents. He took great pleasure in traveling and loved music, especially jazz but most of all he loved spending time with his family and friends. He will be sorely missed.

His family includes his loving wife, Janice, his son, Aaron, and wife, Jennifer, and three grandsons, Foster, Griffin and Hutchinson. He is also survived by son, Commander Matthew, and his wife, Carol, along with his sister, Francine, and her partner, Nuala Hallinan, and his mother, Masza.

A visitation will be held at the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs on Friday, April 8, between the hours of 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Island charity of your choice. The family would like to thank you in advance for all your kind thoughts and prayers.
