Let Freedom Ring
Islander Mev Good will tell the story of two people, one white and one black, and their shared pursuit of freedom, in A Daughter of a Slave Gives Me My Freedom: A Personal Account, his talk on Tuesday, April 26, at 7 p.m. at the Vineyard Haven Public Library.
For the black people it was a long, hard, cruel journey for physical and political freedom. For two white boys, Mev Good and his cousin, it was not a physical or political search for freedom, but an emotional, cultural struggle for their personal freedom from inherited prejudices. Mev’s story begins in 1867 with the birth of his grandfather, Alcee Stewart, a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and continued with the friendship of his black cook, a former slave. Their stories show how monumental differences could be reconciled.
