Catesby Brooke Jones of Richmond, Va., died on July 9. He was 86 and was a lifelong summer resident of the Vineyard.

Born on March 7, 1925, in Lexington, Va., he was the son of the late Col. and Mrs. Catesby ap Catesby Jones.

Mr. Jones was educated at St. Paul’s School in Concord, N.H. He attended the Virginia Military Institute where he was a member of the football team. He served in the Army during World War II, reaching the rank of first lieutenant. After the war, he attended and graduated from Yale University. He joined the State Planters Bank (now SunTrust) in Richmond and served as senior vice president in charge of the National Division of United Virginia Bank (now SunTrust). While at the bank, he completed the graduate school of banking at Rutgers University and the advanced management course at the Darden School, University of Virginia. He retired in 1985 and became a financial consultant with Marsh & McLennan.

He was active in many civic and charitable organizations. He served as chairman of the budget and membership committee of Richmond Chamber of Commerce, treasurer and director of Virginia State Chamber of Commerce, treasurer and director of Richmond Area Community Council (now United Way), treasurer and director of Hospital Hospitality House, vice chairman of Richmond Independence Bicentennial Commission and the chairman of Metropolitan Economic Development Council. He was a former director of Spindale Mills Ink, president and director of Buffalo Creek and Gauley Railroad and an organizing director of Regency Bank (now BB& T). He was a former president of the Society of the Cincinnati in the state of Virginia, and a former president general of the Society of the Cincinnati, the third Virginian to be elected to this office, 200 years after George Washington and 25 years after his father held this office. He was a former governor of the Society of Colonial Wars in the state of Virginia.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and a former vestryman at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where he also served as chairman of the Oral School (the church’s successful program for hearing-impaired children).

He was a member of the Country Club of Virginia, the Edgartown Golf Club, Jamestown Society, Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, 55 Golf Association and the Soixante Plus.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Jeffreys Jones; his son, Catesby ap Catesby Jones and his wife, Sarah, and daughters Brooke J. Hodges and her husband, Tom, Elizabeth J. Hiatt and her husband, Charles; Barbara’s children, Steven K. Webb and his wife, Shannon, Glenn E. Webb and his wife, Melissa and Kelly W. Hagan; and grandchildren, Sara, Ali, Laura, Liza, Jack, Maggie, Eli, Zachary, Joseph, Jacob, Sam and Stephanie. He is also survived by a brother, William C. Jones and his wife, Lee.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw avenue, in Richmond. A memorial service will be held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church on River Road in Goochland County at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 14. Interment will be private. A memorial service will be held at a later date on the Island.
