Shephard Fine ArtSpace in Oak Bluffs is hosting the first of what hopefully will not be the last exhibition of its kind. The show features artists with Island connections who are showing for the first time on the Vineyard. They include Colin Ruel, Rick Lazes, Jonathan Klenner, Dylan Sean Murray, and Percy 14e Wright.
Mr. Ruel is perhaps best known as a musician on the local music scene but he has also begun to gain a following for his art, particularly in his adopted home of Greenpoint, Brooklyn. His paintings reflect his interest in cave drawings and other primitive designs, plus influences such as shamanism and anthropomorphism. His work contains hints of Gustav Klimt, Native American ornamentation and Fra Angelico.
Mr. Wright is also influenced by the inner journey, describing his work as “Half warrior, half shaman, my work celebrates the organic nature of a mark’s movement through space.” His medium is painting, in particular graffiti.
Mr. Klenner was raised in the Patagonia region of Argentina and his photography is heavily influenced by his relationship with nature.
Mr. Lazes creates wood sculptures. His current series is entitled The World is Bending and it makes a social statement about the flux that people around the world are experiencing.
And finally, Dylan Sean Murray’s photographic work uses infrared film, which picks up the heat from organic matter, to create eerie worlds that are hand-colored and printed with archival ink jet on canvas.
The opening reception for the exhibit is on Saturday, Sept. 3, from 5 to 8 p.m. The gallery is located at 8 Uncas avenue in Oak Bluffs. For more details, call 508-693-8001.
