Hazel Greenwood of Chilmark, Rye, N.Y. and London, England, died on Thursday, Jan. 7 at her beloved home on South Road. A seasonal resident of the Vineyard for almost 50 years, Hazel found the stone walls and rolling hills of the Vineyard landscape reminiscent of her childhood home in Gloucestershire, England. Her love of gardens began in her youth and brought her happiness and joy throughout her life. Hazel taught family and friends something unique about gardening and life that we will carry on in her memory. She was talented in many areas: an accomplished woodcut artist and a gifted embroiderer, a wonderful cook and a superb baker. Summer afternoon visitors to her house were always welcomed to a proper English tea. Among other Vineyard activities in years past, Hazel also managed her daughter Jill’s clothing boutique, Pandora’s Box in Menemsha.

Hazel was born July 17, 1927 in Monmouth, Wales. She leaves behind her husband of 61 years, Ronald Greenwood, with whom she traveled throughout the world in connection with his business; two daughters, Jill Greenwood duPont and Jane Greenwood, four grandchildren and many loving family and friends.

Interment was at Abel’s Hill Cemetery next to her dear son David, who predeceased her in 1991.

A gathering in remembrance of Hazel will be held at the Chilmark Public Library at noon on Sunday, Jan. 17. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Vineyard Nursing Association, P.O. Box 399, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.
