Oceanographer Andrew McDonnell will share photographs, stories and basic science from his research and travels to Antarctica on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Vineyard Haven Public Library, exploring some of the scenery, wildlife and people that make Antarctica such a unique and magnificent place. His talk, Adrift in Antarctica: Oceanographic Science and Discovery along the West Antarctic Peninsula, will also explain some of the scientific objectives and operations on and around the continent and describe how a rapidly changing climate is threatening the ice, oceans and ecosystems of the region.

Mr. McDonnell is a Ph.D. student in the marine chemistry and geochemistry department at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and MIT. His thesis research investigates the ocean’s carbon cycle, focusing on the natural sequestration of carbon in the deep ocean and sediments via sinking particles. Since 2004, Mr. McDonnell has spent over 200 science days at sea.
