Helen (Mikki) Webb of Oak Bluffs died on Jan. 9 at Massachusetts General Hospital following a brief illness.

She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on Nov. 19, 1918, the only child of Herbert and Margaret Mickens. Following her graduation from Philadelphia High School for Girls, Mikki worked for the federal government for several years. She later matriculated at Temple University, graduating with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education. This allowed her to pursue her dream for a teaching career. Mrs. Webb taught for several years at the Rhoads Elementary School, where she initiated and developed many innovative programs for disabled and challenged children. After her tenure at Rhoads she was appointed principal of the Leslie Pinkney Hill Elementary School, where she served until her retirement several years later. Her professional excellence and compassionate devotion to her students was recognized by her peers when she was voted Principal of the Year by the Philadelphia Board of Education.

She was a dedicated member of Christ Church and St. Michael’s where she was a lay reader; she was a member of the vestry, the stewardship committee, the flower guild and the Episcopal Church Women. Her social and civic memberships included the National Circle-lets, National Carats and the Philadelphia Garden Club.

Following her professional retirement and the death of her loving and devoted husband, Earl Webb, Mikki became a full-time resident of Oak Bluffs. She continued her religious affiliation at Grace Episcopal Church where she had worshiped during her many years as a summer resident. She became an active and involved member of the Oak Bluffs Cottagers and served at least one term as president of the organization. Mikki touched many lives, and while she has no known surviving relatives she leaves a host of devoted and loyal friends. She will be greatly missed.

Services will be held in her memory in Philadelphia and Oak Bluffs during the spring or summer.
