Nancy Ann Abdelnour died on Jan. 2 at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston after battling a long illness. An Island native, Nancy was the daughter of Harry and Bertha Abdelnour.

Nancy was born at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on August 1, 1960. She was brought up in Oak Bluffs where many old-time Islanders will remember Harry’s Laundry on Circuit avenue, her father’s business. Later she would be a fixture at Nancy’s Snack Bar, which was built by her parents on the Oak Bluffs harbor. Nancy loved going to the beach with her children, especially blasting up the beach on Chappy. She was an avid sportswoman. Her children loved fishing, clamming and cooking on the beach, or anywhere when they were with their mom. She was well-liked by everyone she met. For many years in the fall and winter she could be found at the local shucking house, opening scallops to support her children. Nancy was known to be one of the fastest openers on the Island. She will be greatly missed but never forgotten by anyone that knew her.

She is survived by three sons, Shawn M. Willoughby Jr., Jason R. Willoughby and Ryan H. Willoughby; a daughter Taylor L. Higgins and her longtime partner, John Beringer. She was predeceased by her brother Douglas Abdelnour Sr.

A service will be held on Sunday, Feb. 14 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Portuguese American Club in Oak Bluffs. Donations would be greatly appreciated to help with the cost of interment and can be made at the service. Please bring a dish to share.
