Sail Martha’s Vineyard
Welcomes Seasonal Youth
This year Sail Martha’s Vineyard is able to accommodate seasonal youth in its summer programs. Since 1993 Sail MV has taught over 2,000 young Islanders to sail, and now for the first time it is setting aside places in each class to accommodate summer visitors. Each of Sail MV’s 12 sailing modules for 8 to 16-year-olds will have spaces saved for seasonal residents on a first-come, first-served basis. The courses taught in two four-week sessions range from the introductory Messing Around in Boats for eight and nine-year-olds, to Novice sailing in Optimists, to windsurfing to advanced sailing in 420s.
Sail Martha’s Vineyard’s mission is to celebrate and protect the maritime heritage of the Island. It not only provides the summer sailing experience, it facilitates maritime related projects in the community, such as the rowing club, the Captain’s Licensing course and the maritime studies course in the high school. It also sponsors varsity and junior varsity sailing teams at the high school that compete in area regattas in both the spring and fall seasons, and an after-school advanced skills program for junior high school students.
Sail MV has been dedicated to offering students of all ages an appreciation and knowledge of the sea that surrounds them and is pleased now to be able to extend that to the Island’s seasonal residents. For more information visit the Web site at sailmv.com or call the Sail MV office at 508-696-7644.
